Comparative analysis of the costs and profitability of innovative and traditional methods of honey bee queen rearing in the USA

The article presents a review of current economic and technological aspects of queen rearing in the USA, taking into account modern industry challenges and growing market demands. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the economic indicators of traditional and innovative queen-rearing technologies in the United States, with the goal of identifying optimal rearing strategies for various scales and production conditions. The research methods involved a comprehensive review of open scientific sources, including publications that assessed the cost, labor intensity, and profitability of larval grafting, artificial insemination, controlled incubation, and breeding programs. Data were systematized across cost categories (labor, materials, and infrastructure) and profitability indicators (average cost price, selling price, unit profit, production volume, and margin).
Results. It was established that traditional queen-rearing methods ensure a relatively low unit cost ($13–20 per mated queen) thanks to economies of scale and minimal capital investment, but are characterized by high labor intensity and moderate margin indicators. Innovative approaches, particularly instrumental insemination and controlled incubation, require significant initial investments in specialized equipment and personnel training (labor costs per queen increase fivefold or more). Yet, they provide higher unit profits due to the sale of premium breeding queens at prices of several hundred dollars or more. Meanwhile, the use of isolated mating yards and automated monitoring systems contributes to increased yields of marketable queens and reduced rejection rates, offsetting the additional costs.
Conclusions suggest the advisability of combining traditional rearing methods with innovative ones to achieve mass production at minimal costs, while also producing a premium-segment product with high margins. Research prospects lie in the validation and adaptation of the developed economic-technological model under various regional and scale conditions in the USA, based on field data on actual cost price and queen yield.
