Conceptual approaches to enhancing the competitiveness of ukrainian grain in the European market

Abstract

The article reveals current aspects of improving the competitiveness of Ukrainian grain in the European Union market amid the dynamic challenges of the modern agri-food environment. The authors substantiate the strategic importance of grain exports for Ukraine’s economy and identify key factors influencing its effectiveness in the context of European integration processes.

The European market is characterized as a promising yet demanding trade space, imposing high standards on the quality, environmental friendliness, traceability of origin, and certification of agricultural products. The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of Ukraine’s grain sector, export structure, and positions in the European market, which allowed the identification of main competitive barriers, including tariff restrictions, regulatory instability, logistical difficulties, political tensions with certain EU member states, and insufficient institutional support.

Particular attention is paid to integrated conceptual approaches to building competitiveness, including innovative modernization of agricultural production, development of precision farming, implementation of international quality standards (HACCP, ISO, Global G.A.P.), improvement of logistical infrastructure, national grain branding policies, as well as adherence to environmental principles in accordance with the EU’s “Green Deal” requirements.

The necessity of harmonizing Ukrainian legislation with EU phytosanitary regulations, creating mechanisms to compensate logistical costs for agricultural producers, and developing a state export support program is separately highlighted. It is noted that the key to sustainable integration of Ukraine into the European agricultural space lies in a comprehensive, institutionally and technologically supported approach based on strategic cooperation between the state, business, and scientific institutions.

Thus, enhancing the competitiveness of Ukrainian grain is viewed not only as an economic but also as a geopolitical priority that contributes to strengthening food security, economic stability, and Ukraine’s international image.
