Sustainable enterprise development: concept, implementation mechanisms, and challenges in the context of war

Abstract

In the context of growing resource scarcity and escalating environmental challenges, enterprises must integrate the principles of sustainable development into their strategic priorities to ensure long-term viability and strengthen their competitive positions. The purpose of this article is to identify the concept of sustainable enterprise development and its active support through the enhancement of the external environment and internal subsystems by means of innovation implementation. The article employs methods of analysis and synthesis of scientific literature, systematization, and theoretical generalization. It has been established that sustainable enterprise development is a process of purposeful socio-economic growth that not only considers current needs but is also focused on meeting the needs of future generations. Sustainable development harmoniously combines economic benefit, social responsibility, and environmental stability, making it a comprehensive strategy for long-term success. As an alternative to sustainable development, the article outlines the concept of unpredictable development, which is based on three mechanisms: parasitism, fraud, and wastefulness. It is proven that sustainable enterprise development implies an operational approach in which a company takes care of the external environment, ensuring the preservation and restoration of external resources, while also supporting its internal subsystems by developing them to ensure stable regeneration. It is substantiated that sustainable development is based on two key directions: external regeneration (including economic, ethical, and social components) and internal regeneration (including economic and ethical components). The article identifies key challenges to the implementation of the sustainable development concept in Ukrainian enterprises, including the absence of a coherent state policy regulating innovation implementation, financial instability, low environmental awareness among staff and managers, underdeveloped infrastructure in waste management and renewable energy, technological backwardness, and limited innovation activity. Overcoming the above-mentioned barriers is a necessary condition for the effective implementation of the sustainable development concept in Ukrainian enterprises.
